How do you make sure you are not just full of it?

"I commit to taking full responsibility for the circumstances of my life and for my physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. I commit to supporting others to take full responsibility for their lives."

As opposed to...

"I commit to blaming others and myself for what is wrong in the world. I commit to being a victim, villain, or a hero and taking more or less than 100% responsibility."

A few days ago I began the book, "The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership." by Dethmer, Chapman, & Klemp. Last night I read the first chapter, Commitment One, Taking Radical Responsibility. I loved it! I felt like it was speaking right to what I would say leadership is supposed to be.

By the way, me thinking anything is "supposed to be" goes directly against what the book believes. But, hey, I just started, give me a break.

So anyway, last night I was filled with good ideas and a good feeling and thought, "Yep, I am so going to do this." And then, well, the sun came up and life started again.

My question is how do we make sure we are not just full of it?

I mean there were moments that what I read last night came into my head and it might have made an impact on my day. However, nothing substantial took place and there was certainly no radical change.

It occurred to me as I sat down to read tonight, what is the point of learning about the next commitment if I had not operationalized, not adopted, the last one yet?

I guess the next chapter, the next commitment, will be yet another good idea I have in my head. Something else that might make a difference at some point in my life. But... well I do not want just another good idea in my long list of good ideas.

This issue is certainly not isolated to this book, really its every book I have ever read.

How do we turn what we know into what we do?

How do we adopt new ideas into our everyday life?

Especially, how do we adopt new radical practices in an organization full of people that do not support the change? Heck, they do not even know about the change?

I get, I do, be the change you want to see. Stay steady and slowly but surely the change might take hold. That sounds good sure but let's face it, that's not very easy and not even practical.

So what do you do?

How you do it?

How do you keep new idea fresh in your mind?

How do you stay motivated for the long haul?

How do you decide where to start?
